How business days from today are counted
- Today is not counted. 1 business day from today is the next weekday that is not a holiday.
- Saturdays and Sundays are skipped, and so are the 11 US federal holidays on their observed dates: a holiday on a Saturday is observed the Friday before, a holiday on a Sunday the Monday after.
- Counting from a weekend works the same way: the first business day is the next Monday, or Tuesday if that Monday is a holiday.
Why some calculators give a different date
Many “business days from today” pages skip weekends but not holidays. That is fine until a holiday falls in the window: then their date comes out a day early. The numbers above already skip federal holidays, so a deadline of 10 business days from today lands where a federal office would put it.
Banks and ACH
The Federal Reserve closes on the same 11 holidays, so a payment counted in business days from today usually lands on the same date. The one exception is the Friday before a holiday that falls on a Saturday: federal offices close that Friday, but Federal Reserve Banks and the ACH system stay open. When one of those Fridays falls in your window, compare both calendars on federal vs bank working days.
